Newsletter: 3rd Quarter 2005

Welcome to the 3rd issue of our GC3 Newsletter for 2005-10-25

The lead article for this issue highlights the $230M expansion of the RG Tanna Coal Terminal at Gladstone to help meet the demands of Australia’s export coal market. This expansion is synonymous with the continuing growth of coal mines and other ports throughout the region, cementing our place in the world market.

The Queensland Government is responding to this boom by implementing.a wide spectrum of initiatives to assist the coal industry with exploration, production and transport.

The next article, about the new Asia-Pacific partnership on Clean Development and Climate, highlights the world-wide concerns about CO2 emissions and how countries are working together to deal with it.

Mackay sugar cane farmers are disappointed that their proposed renewable energy scheme did not find Government support, and therefore will probably not succeed. Their Mackay Sugar $95M co-generation project has been shelved after failing to win Federal Government support, however The Mackay Sugar Board are continuing to explore alternative funding opportunities to advance the project in spite of the setback.

From abroad, it is interesting to note that the United Kingdom is considering the controversial introduction of personal carbon quotas in an effort to help them meet the terms of the Kyoto Protocol. Under the scheme, each person would be issued with carbon units to be used when buying products such as flights and petrol.

Do you know how much coal we have? The last item in this Newsletter tells us that our reserves are expected to last for more than 200years. Obviously the work of the GC3 and similar organisations is important in keeping the community in touch with the latest developments relating to his important resource.
